Iran: global campaign launched to free teacher union leader
Education International has called on its member organisations to take swift action to firmly protest the unwarranted six-year jail sentence imposed on Esmail Abdi, a leader of the Tehran Teacher Trade Association.

Esmail Abdi, a leader of the Iranian Teachers' Trade Association, was arrested on 27 June following his attempt to obtain a visa to attend the 7th Education International World Congress in Ottawa, Canada in late July. The Education International is deeply concerned about the repression facing representatives of the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers Trade Associations.

Maryam Al-Khawaja, a leading member of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), was arrested in late August as she tried to enter Bahrain to visit her father, Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, who is presently on hunger strike while serving a life sentence for human rights activities.
Charlotte Monro is a well-respected, longstanding staff member and trade union representative at Whipps Cross Hospital. In 2009 Charlotte received a special award from the Trust for her tireless efforts to defend services. The new Barts Health Trust has now dismissed her because she continued to do so!

Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic made a ruling in September 2013, which denies citizenship to thousands of children, women and men of Haitian origin, many of whose parents were brought to work in the Dominican Republic’s sugar industry.
The Government is proposing to remove Mary Seacole from the National Curriculum. A distinguished list of academic, trade union and political figures are opposed to this and wish to see Mary Seacole retained so that current and future generations can appreciate this important historical person. Many were killed were shot at close range while trying to surrender. The Marikana miners were demanding a tripling of their salary to R12,500 (£950 or €1100) per month
