Stansted 15

The Stansted 15 are a group of concerned citizens who peacefully stopped a deportation flight to Nigeria and Ghana at Stansted airport on 28 March 2017

They have now been convicted. The Stansted 15 expected to face retribution for their protest. They never expected to be found guilty of terrorism offences. But on Monday, the group became the first activists involved in a non-violent direct action protest to be convicted under laws that were formulated in response to the Lockerbie bombing.

The group had information of people meant to be on that flight, who would be put in extreme danger if they were forcibly returned.… Read on ...

Tower Hamlets Palestine Solidarity Campaign

On Wednesday 21st November, a group of residents from Tower Hamlets Palestine Solidarity Campaign presented a petition to the full council meeting, requesting that the council ‘Safeguard Palestinian Solidarity’. [1] This was in response to the recent adoption of the controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, without any caveat that would enable Palestinians and their supporters to continue to speak out freely about harmful actions of the Israeli government.

Tower Hamlets Palestine Solidarity Campaign are pleased that in response to our petition councillors Sirajul Islam, Kevin Brady, and Mayor John Biggs made supporting statements in solidarity with Palestine.… Read on ...

NATIONAL UNITY DEMONSTRATION AGAINST RACISM & FASCISM

SATURDAY 17TH NOVEMBER 2018

UCU London Retired Members who wish to march with the banner should assemble by 12:30 at the junction of Argyll St and Oxford Street. We can then go together to the start of the demo in Portland Place.

Oppose the racist “Democratic Football Lads Alliance”

On Saturday 13 October, the racist ‘Democratic’ Football Lads Alliance (DFLA) have organised a demonstration for bigots and Islamophobes in London. Tommy Robinson, ex EDL leader and notorious fascist, who is being courted by UKIP, is a firm favourite of the DFLA. Thugs linked to the group attacked RMT union members and others, after a recent anti fascist march in London. The far right, at street level and electorally, use Islamophobia as a way of rebuilding in Britain. Across Europe racist and fascist organisations are receiving growing support at a level not seen since the 1930s. But we can stop them.… Read on ...

The harsh sentencing of anti-fracking campaigners sets a dangerous precedent

We the undersigned are writing to express our growing concern about the shrinking space for communities and environmental defenders to engage in civil opposition to fracking developments in the UK.

Sign here…

This week three non-violent campaigners opposing fracking were jailed for 15 to 16 months simply for ‘causing a public nuisance’ and for not expressing regret. Although others have received jail sentences in more recent times, this is the first time since 1932 that environmental defenders have been imprisoned for such long periods of time for staging a protest in the UK.… Read on ...

What is wrong with using Amazon?

Amazon are Union Busters

Amazon have a little-reported, but undeniable record of preventing their work force from unionising. In 2001, Amazon.co.uk hired a US management consultancy organisation, The Burke Group, to assist in defeating a campaign by the Graphical, Paper and Media Union (GPMU, now part of Unite the Union) to achieve recognition in the Milton Keynes distribution depot. It was alleged that the company sacked four union members during the 2001 recognition drive and held a series of captive meetings with employees.

Also In 2001, 850 employees in Seattle were laid off by Amazon.com after a unionisation drive. The Washington Alliance of Technological Workers (WashTech) accused the company of violating union laws, and claimed Amazon managers subjected them to intimidation and heavy propaganda.… Read on ...

Take a Stand Against Racism : July 14 2018

Resolution of the UCU London Retired Members Branch – 29th June 2018

UCU Retired Branch notes the fifteen thousand strong demonstration of the far right wing on June 9th in central London which chanted racist and islamophobic hate messages, made Hitler salutes, violently took over a tourist bus, attacked and injured police and attempted to break the gates of Downing Street. We recognise that there is a dangerous far right mass movement growing, which unites elements of UKIP, the EDL, its former leader Tommy Robinson, the BNP and the expanding Democratic Football Lads Alliance. It has international far-right support from, for example, the USA (Steve Bannon), Holland (Geert Wilders), Germany (Alternative fuer Deutschland), Belgium (Filip de Winter).
